What to expect

From your first consultation onwards.

  1. 01

Free consultation to assess skin laxity and confirm radio frequency is the right tool

  2. 02

Skin cleansed and a conductive gel applied to the treatment area

  3. 03

RF handpiece moved in slow, overlapping passes across the area, maintaining a target temperature for several minutes per zone

  4. 04

Cooling and SPF 50 applied in clinic before you leave

  5. 05

Repeat sessions booked at the one to two-week interval to complete the course

Radio frequency is the comfortable, no-downtime tightening treatment that builds collagen across a course rather than peaking in a single aggressive session. Controlled electromagnetic energy heats the deeper layers of the skin to trigger immediate fibre contraction and ongoing fibroblast activity. From £65 per single session, with a course of six at £380, across our seven UK clinics.

How radio frequency actually works

Radio frequency, RF, is an electromagnetic energy delivered through a handpiece that passes through the skin and generates controlled heat at a target depth in the dermis. The handpiece is moved continuously across the area to maintain a target temperature for several minutes per zone, without overheating any single point.

This controlled heat does two things in sequence. First, the existing collagen fibres in the dermis contract immediately when heated past a threshold, giving a subtle tightening that you can sometimes see during the session. Second, the controlled thermal stimulation signals fibroblasts to produce fresh collagen and elastin over the following weeks, which tightens and improves the skin further as the new tissue develops.

Because RF works through gentle, repeated heating rather than a single high-intensity pulse, the treatment is comfortable, requires no anaesthetic and produces no downtime, but it builds its result across a course of six to eight sessions rather than peaking in one.

Who radio frequency is for

The classic RF candidate has early skin laxity along the jawline, cheeks or neck, and wants a gentle, ongoing tightening approach rather than a once-a-year heavier treatment such as HIFU. RF is also a strong preventive option for patients in their late twenties to forties who want to build and preserve collagen before any laxity becomes obvious.

It pairs well with other CoLaz treatments. Many patients use RF as a monthly maintenance after an annual HIFU session, as a complement to Profhilo bio-remodelling for layered skin quality work, or as a finishing tightening step after a course of microneedling or peels. The right place for RF in your treatment plan is agreed at consultation.

RF is not the right tool for very heavy laxity, where HIFU or a surgical opinion will give a more meaningful result. We will say so honestly at consultation rather than book a course that will under-deliver on the goal.

After your radio frequency

The skin is mildly red and warm for a few hours after the session, similar to how it feels after a brisk walk in cold weather, and settles by the next day. There is no swelling, no peeling and no flaking. Makeup and normal skincare can be resumed the same day; exercise the same day is fine.

Saunas, steam rooms and sunbeds are off the table for twenty-four hours but otherwise there are no restrictions. SPF 50 daily for two weeks while collagen rebuilds, hydrate well, and continue your skincare routine to support the result.

Most patients see a subtle tightening from the first session and a more noticeable improvement at the third or fourth. The full result builds across the course of six to eight as new collagen matures, with the strongest improvement visible four to six weeks after the final session. Maintenance every four to six weeks keeps the result holding.

Often considered alongside

Patients booking radio frequency often consider HIFU for stronger annual lift between RF maintenance courses, Profhilo for bio-remodelling that pairs naturally with RF tightening, LED light therapy as a calming finish to each RF session, and Hydrafacial as a surface maintenance between RF visits.

Common questions

What patients ask first.

What is radio frequency and how does it work? +

Radio frequency, RF, is an electromagnetic energy delivered through a handpiece into the skin. As the energy passes through the tissue, it generates controlled heat at a target depth in the dermis. This heat does two things: it causes the existing collagen fibres to contract immediately, giving a subtle tightening you can sometimes see in the chair, and it triggers fibroblasts to produce fresh collagen over the following weeks. The result is firmer, more elastic skin that builds across a course of sessions.

How is radio frequency different from HIFU? +

Both treatments use energy to heat deeper skin layers and trigger collagen remodelling, but they reach different depths. HIFU uses focused ultrasound to deliver intense energy at a precise depth, typically the SMAS layer, in a single more aggressive session that gives stronger lift but with more discomfort and a longer build time. RF uses a gentler, more diffuse heat that reaches the dermis across a course of six to eight sessions. RF suits patients wanting an ongoing maintenance approach; HIFU suits patients wanting a once-a-year reset.

Does radio frequency hurt? +

RF is one of the most comfortable energy treatments on the menu. Most patients describe it as a warm, relaxing sensation similar to a hot stone massage, with no sharpness or sting. The handpiece is moved continuously across the area to maintain a target temperature without overheating any single point. No numbing is needed; many patients find the session enjoyable rather than uncomfortable.

How many radio frequency sessions will I need? +

A standard course is six to eight sessions spaced one to two weeks apart. Most patients see a subtle tightening from the first session and a more noticeable improvement at the third or fourth. The full result builds across the course as new collagen matures, with the strongest improvement visible four to six weeks after the final session. Maintenance every four to six weeks once the initial course is complete is recommended to preserve the result.

Is there downtime after radio frequency? +

There is essentially no downtime. The skin is mildly red and warm for a few hours after the session, similar to a brisk walk in cold weather, and settles by the next day. Makeup and normal skincare can be resumed the same day; exercise the same day is fine. Saunas, steam rooms and sunbeds are off the table for twenty-four hours but otherwise there are no restrictions.

Who should not have radio frequency? +

We do not treat patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, who have an implanted electrical device (pacemakers, defibrillators) or metallic implants in the treatment area, who have an active skin infection in the area, who have severe rosacea or melasma where the heat may flare the condition, or who are on photosensitising medication. Medical history is reviewed at consultation and treatment is adjusted or declined where appropriate.

How much does radio frequency cost at CoLaz? +

A single radio frequency session is £65. A course of six is £380, working out at approximately £63 per session, the protocol most patients choose because RF builds with cumulative sessions. Single sessions are popular as a pre-event tightening top-up. Pricing is for the face; treatment of the neck, jawline or other areas is confirmed at consultation.
