LED light therapy is the no-heat, no-UV, no-downtime treatment that quietly does a lot. Red light builds collagen, blue light kills acne bacteria, near-infrared accelerates healing. None of it damages the skin, all of it improves the skin underneath, and a course of six is enough to see real change. From £55 per twenty-minute session, with a course of six at £210, across our seven UK clinics.

How LED actually works

LED light therapy uses specific wavelengths of visible and near-infrared light, each tuned to a particular target in the skin. There is no heat, no UV and no damage to the skin barrier. The light is simply absorbed by chromophores in the skin and converts to a biological signal that drives a specific cellular response.

Red light at around 633 nanometres penetrates the dermis and stimulates fibroblasts, the cells that produce collagen and elastin. Over a course, this builds skin firmness, smooths fine lines and improves overall tone. Blue light at around 415 nanometres targets the bacteria responsible for inflammatory acne, killing them directly without damaging the surrounding skin.

Near-infrared at around 830 nanometres goes deeper than visible light, accelerating cellular repair, reducing inflammation and speeding up the body's natural healing response. This is why LED is often added after a peel, microneedling or laser session to settle the skin and shorten recovery.

Which wavelength for which skin

Red light is the all-rounder and the most-booked single wavelength at CoLaz. It suits early ageing, fine lines, dullness, overall skin quality and patients who want a gentle monthly maintenance between bigger protocols. Twelve sessions over twelve weeks gives the strongest baseline result.

Blue light is the targeted choice for active acne, oily congested skin and persistent breakouts. A six to eight-session weekly protocol meaningfully reduces the bacterial load and calms inflammation, often without the irritation that prescription acne treatments can cause.

Near-infrared is best for deeper healing and recovery. We use it after microneedling, peels and laser to settle the skin within hours rather than days, and as a standalone for patients with sensitive or reactive skin who need a calming protocol that still does real work.

Many sessions combine two wavelengths, red plus blue for hormonal acne in mature skin, or red plus near-infrared for ageing skin with sensitivity. The right combination for you is confirmed at consultation.

After your LED

There is no downtime. None. You can apply makeup straight afterwards, return to work, exercise the same day and go in the sun (with normal SPF) without any restriction. This is the gentlest treatment on the CoLaz menu and the only one that comes with no aftercare beyond your usual SPF.

If LED is added as a finishing step after a peel, microneedling or laser, follow the aftercare for that treatment, not the LED. The LED is simply accelerating the recovery the other treatment requires.

Acne breakouts often calm visibly within two to three sessions as the blue light reduces the bacterial load. Anti-ageing results build more gradually over the course of six to twelve sessions and continue to improve for a few weeks after the final session as new collagen matures.

Often considered alongside

Patients booking LED often consider Hydrafacial as the deeper monthly maintenance facial, chemical peels for stronger surface renewal alongside LED, microneedling for collagen-induction with LED as the recovery booster, and oxygen facial when an extra layer of hydration and glow is the goal.

Common questions

What patients ask first.

What is LED light therapy and how does it work? +

LED light therapy uses specific wavelengths of visible and near-infrared light to trigger different responses in the skin. Red light at around 633nm penetrates the dermis and stimulates fibroblasts to produce more collagen, which is what gives the anti-ageing effect. Blue light at around 415nm targets the bacteria responsible for inflammatory acne, killing them on contact without damaging the surrounding skin. Near-infrared light at around 830nm goes deeper still, accelerating cellular repair and reducing inflammation. There is no heat, no UV and no damage to the skin barrier.

Which LED wavelength is right for my skin? +

Red light is the all-rounder for ageing, fine lines, dullness and overall skin quality. Blue light is the targeted choice for active acne, oily congested skin and breakouts. Near-infrared is best for deeper healing, post-treatment recovery and inflammation. Many sessions combine two wavelengths, for example red and blue for hormonal acne in mature skin, or red and near-infrared for ageing skin with sensitivity. The right combination for you is confirmed at consultation.

Does LED hurt and is there downtime? +

LED is completely painless and there is no downtime at all. The skin feels mildly warm during the session but the light itself produces no heat damage. You can apply makeup straight afterwards, return to work immediately, exercise the same day and go in the sun (with normal SPF) without any restriction. This is the gentlest treatment on the CoLaz menu.

How many LED sessions will I need? +

For visible results, a course of six to twelve sessions spaced one to two weeks apart is standard. Acne protocols often run for six to eight weekly sessions; anti-ageing protocols build over twelve sessions over twelve weeks. Many patients then book a single maintenance session every four to six weeks once the initial course is complete. LED is also often used as an add-on after a peel, microneedling or laser session to speed up recovery.

Who should not have LED? +

LED is one of the safest aesthetic treatments available and suits almost every skin type, including very sensitive and reactive skin. We do not treat patients with photosensitivity conditions such as lupus, patients on photosensitising medication (including some antibiotics and isotretinoin), patients with a history of skin cancer in the treatment area, or pregnant patients in the first trimester as a precaution. Medical history is reviewed at consultation and we adjust or decline treatment where appropriate.

When will I see results from LED? +

Acne breakouts often calm visibly within two to three sessions as the blue light reduces the bacterial load. Anti-ageing results, smoother texture, fresher tone and improved firmness, build more gradually over a course of six to twelve sessions as new collagen develops. Most patients see the strongest results around the eighth to twelfth session and maintain them with a single session every four to six weeks.

How much does LED cost at CoLaz? +

A standalone twenty-minute LED session is £55. A course of three is £135 (working out at £45 per session) and a course of six is £210 (working out at £35 per session). The course of six is the most popular option because LED builds with cumulative sessions and the per-session cost drops significantly. LED can also be added to most other facial treatments as a finishing step, priced at consultation.
