HIFU is the non-surgical face and neck lift that works at the same depth a surgical lift addresses, the SMAS layer, but without any cutting and without weeks of recovery. Focused ultrasound is delivered in pulses through the skin to converge at a set depth below it, triggering collagen contraction and remodelling. From £399 for neck and jawline, with results building over three months and lasting twelve to eighteen months, at our Reading and Hounslow clinics.
How HIFU actually works
HIFU, High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound, delivers ultrasound energy in tightly focused pulses that pass harmlessly through the skin's surface and converge at a precise depth below it. The energy concentrates at that focal point, creating small zones of controlled thermal coagulation while the surface skin stays cool and intact.
The standout depth is 4.5 millimetres, which corresponds to the SMAS, the muscular layer a surgical facelift tightens with sutures. By delivering controlled thermal injury at exactly this plane, HIFU triggers contraction of the existing tissue and signals the body to lay down fresh collagen over the following weeks.
Most CoLaz HIFU sessions use three depths in sequence: 4.5mm for the SMAS lift, 3.0mm for dermal tightening and 1.5mm for surface tone. This layered approach addresses laxity, skin quality and tone in one session and gives a more natural, balanced result than a single-depth treatment.
Who HIFU is for
HIFU is best for patients with early to moderate laxity, the early jowl, the softening jawline, the loose neck, the mild brow descent, who want genuine lift without surgery and without weeks of recovery. It is also a strong preventive option for patients in their late thirties and forties who want to stay ahead of laxity rather than catch up to it.
It is not the right tool for very heavy or advanced laxity, where the amount of skin to be tightened is beyond what non-surgical energy can manage. For those patients we will say so honestly at consultation and discuss alternatives, including PDO thread lift or referral for a surgical opinion.
HIFU pairs well with other CoLaz treatments. Anti-wrinkle injections address dynamic lines that HIFU does not target. Profhilo improves skin quality across the same area. Dermal filler restores volume where it has been lost. A treatment plan often combines two or three of these for a balanced, natural result.
After your HIFU
The skin may be mildly red, tender or slightly swollen for one to three days after the session. Some patients report a low-grade ache in the treated area for forty-eight hours, similar to mild muscle soreness, which settles with paracetamol if needed. Most return to work the next day.
No saunas, steam rooms, sunbeds or intense exercise for forty-eight hours. SPF 50 daily for the next four weeks while collagen rebuilds. Makeup and normal skincare can be resumed the same day.
Some patients see a small immediate tightening, but the real lift develops gradually as new collagen matures. Expect visible improvement at six to eight weeks and the strongest result at three months. The lift then holds for twelve to eighteen months before a top-up is recommended at your annual review.

Often considered alongside

Common questions
What patients ask first.
What is HIFU and how does it work? +
HIFU stands for High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound. The device delivers ultrasound energy in tightly focused pulses that bypass the surface of the skin and converge at a precise depth below it, typically at the SMAS layer, the same plane a surgical facelift tightens. At that depth, the energy creates small zones of controlled thermal coagulation, which the body then heals by laying down fresh collagen and contracting the existing tissue. The surface skin is left intact throughout.
How is HIFU different from a surgical facelift? +
A surgical facelift physically lifts and re-suspends the SMAS layer with sutures, giving an immediate and substantial result that lasts many years but requires general anaesthetic, incisions, weeks of recovery and significant cost. HIFU tightens the same SMAS layer non-surgically using focused ultrasound, with no cuts, no anaesthetic and no real downtime. Results are more modest, build over three months and last twelve to eighteen months. HIFU is best for patients with early to moderate laxity who want genuine lift without surgery.
Does HIFU hurt? +
Most patients describe HIFU as uncomfortable rather than painful, particularly along bonier areas such as the jawline and brow. You will feel small bursts of warmth and a tingling or prickling sensation with each pulse. Topical numbing is available on request, and the clinician can adjust energy settings if a particular area is too uncomfortable. The whole session takes sixty to ninety minutes depending on the area.
How many HIFU sessions will I need? +
Most patients need only one session for a visible result that builds over three months and lasts twelve to eighteen months. A second session a year later maintains the result. Patients with more advanced laxity may benefit from a second session at the three-month mark for a stronger lift; this is agreed at consultation based on what your skin and structure need.
Who should not have HIFU? +
We do not treat patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, who have an active skin infection in the treatment area, who have implanted electrical devices (pacemakers, defibrillators), metallic implants in the treatment area, severe acne in the treatment area, or who have a history of keloid scarring. HIFU is also not ideal for patients with very heavy skin laxity, where a surgical lift will give a better result. Suitability is assessed in detail at consultation.
When will I see results from HIFU? +
Some patients see a small immediate tightening, but the real result builds gradually as new collagen develops. You should see visible improvement at six to eight weeks and the strongest result at three months. The lift then holds for twelve to eighteen months before a top-up is recommended. Photographs at consultation and at the three-month review help track the change, which is often subtle session-by-session but striking when compared across the full timeline.
How much does HIFU cost at CoLaz? +
HIFU is priced by area. Neck and jawline is £399, full face is £599, and full face plus neck plus decolletage is £899. These are single-session prices; most patients need only one session to see a result that builds over three months and lasts twelve to eighteen months. A free consultation is required to assess your skin and confirm HIFU is the right tool before any session is booked.
