Blood spots, known clinically as Campbell de Morgan spots or cherry angiomas, are small bright red papules that sit just under the surface of the skin. They are made up of a tiny cluster of dilated blood vessels, which is what gives them their distinctive red colour. They are extremely common from middle age onward, completely benign, do not turn into anything more serious and are not linked to any internal health problem. They are not contagious.

We use advanced electrolysis with thermolysis as the precision method for these small vascular lesions. A very fine probe is placed at the spot under good light, and a brief low-energy current is delivered for a fraction of a second. The current cauterises the feeding vessel under the lesion, and the spot either fades and disappears within about two weeks (for smaller spots) or crusts over and clears as the scab falls away (for larger raised ones). If the photo shows a lesion that has changed in colour, size or shape, bleeds without being knocked, has more than one colour or is pigmented, the clinician will decline to quote and recommend you see your GP first. If you have suddenly developed many new spots within a few weeks, that should also be reviewed by a doctor before any cosmetic removal. Patients on blood-thinning medication need GP clearance before treatment.

Most blood spots clear in a single session, even when several spots are treated in the same appointment. Larger or older cherry angiomas occasionally need a second top-up session four to six weeks later if a small amount of vascular tissue remains. Scarring is rare with advanced electrolysis on small vascular lesions in trained hands because the method is very precise and the current stays at the lesion. Tiny pinpoint scabs at the treated points are normal for a few days. A small pink mark can stay for a few weeks while the skin remodels and usually fades by three months. Patients with a personal or family history of keloid scarring should mention this at consultation.

Smaller blood spots fade and disappear naturally over around two weeks as the body clears the disabled vessel. Larger raised spots crust over within twenty-four hours and the scab falls away over the next five to seven days, revealing clear skin underneath. Most patients return to work and normal activities the same day, with no significant downtime.

Keep the treated area clean and dry for forty-eight hours, apply the antiseptic balm we provide twice daily for five to seven days, and let the tiny pinpoint scabs fall away naturally rather than picking them. Avoid saunas, steam rooms, swimming pools and intense exercise for forty-eight hours. Apply SPF 50 to any treated areas on visible skin daily for two to four weeks once healed. Most patients return to work and normal activities the same day.
