How to remove ear hair safely
By Alaiyka Parvez

The short version
- • Ear hair is normal and becomes more noticeable with age, especially in men, due to hormonal changes.
- • For the visible outer ear, a purpose-made electric trimmer is the safest everyday option.
- • Never put scissors, razors or hair-removal cream into the ear canal; the canal protects itself and is easily damaged.
- • For longer-term reduction on the outer ear, laser gives long-term reduction and electrolysis is permanent and works on all hair colours.
- • Anything involving the ear canal or persistent problems should go to a GP, not a DIY fix.
Ear hair is completely normal, and it tends to become more noticeable with age, particularly in men, as hormones change how follicles behave. On the visible outer ear it can be tidied safely, but the golden rule is simple: tidy the outside, never go poking inside the ear canal. Here are the safe options and the ones to avoid.
If you want a longer-term solution for the outer ear, laser hair removal and electrolysis are the two clinic routes.

The safe everyday methods
Electric ear trimmer (best for most people)
A trimmer made specifically for ears and noses is the safest, simplest option. It removes visible hair without a sharp blade near delicate skin.
- Use it in good light.
- Clean it before and after each use.
- Trim only the outer ear; do not push it into the canal.
It is painless and immediate, but hair regrows, so you will repeat it every week or two.
Careful tweezing of stray hairs
For the odd long hair on the outer ear, sterilised tweezers are precise. It stings a little, and again, only on the outer ear, never inside the canal.
Professional waxing of the outer ear
A trained therapist can wax the external ear for longer-lasting results than trimming. This should be done by a professional to avoid burns.
Longer-term reduction
For the visible outer ear, the clinic options are:
- Laser hair removal: long-term reduction over a course of sessions, best on darker hair.
- Electrolysis: the only permanent method, and it works on all hair colours and skin tones, as DermNet notes. Useful for fine or grey ear hairs that laser cannot treat.
Both are precise enough for the outer ear in trained hands.
What never to do
This is the important safety part:
- Do not put scissors or razors into the ear canal. It is a cut and infection risk in a delicate, hard-to-see spot.
- Do not use hair-removal (depilatory) creams inside the ear. They are not designed for the canal and can cause chemical burns.
- Do not dig into the canal to remove hair or wax. The ear is largely self-cleaning, and poking can push wax in or damage the canal, sometimes leading to otitis externa.
The AAD’s guidance on removing hair safely applies here: match the method to the area, and treat sensitive zones with extra care.
When to see a GP
If hair or wax inside the canal is bothering you, or you have itching, discharge or hearing changes, see your GP or practice nurse rather than improvising. The NHS has guidance on earwax build-up and safe removal. For the cosmetic outer ear, a consultation will tell you whether laser or electrolysis suits your hair.
