Can I put numbing cream before laser hair removal?

The short version
- • Yes, numbing cream can be used before laser hair removal, but always check with your clinic first.
- • It must be applied to small areas only and removed before treatment, since spreading it over large areas of skin can be dangerous.
- • Applying too much, or over a big area under cling film, risks the anaesthetic being absorbed into the bloodstream, which can be serious.
- • It is usually applied about 30 to 45 minutes before, in a thin layer, on intact skin only.
- • Most laser sessions are tolerable without it, thanks to built-in cooling; ask your clinic what they recommend.
Yes, numbing cream can be used before laser hair removal to make it more comfortable, but with an important condition: clear it with your clinic first, and use it exactly as advised. Used sensibly it is fine; used carelessly, over large areas, it carries real risks. Here is how to think about it.
Most people find laser hair removal quite tolerable thanks to the cooling built into modern devices, so numbing is often optional rather than necessary, but it can help on more sensitive areas.

The genuine safety issue first
This is the part that matters most. Topical anaesthetic creams (usually lidocaine-based) are safe in small amounts on small areas, but applying a lot, or spreading it over a large area of skin, especially under cling film or tight clothing, can cause the anaesthetic to be absorbed into the bloodstream. In rare but serious cases this can affect the heart and nervous system. Both the US FDA and UK medicines guidance have warned about harm from over-using topical numbing products. This is exactly why your clinic should guide the amount and the area, rather than you applying it liberally at home.
How it is used properly
When a clinic does advise numbing cream, the safe pattern is:
- A lidocaine-based product, at an appropriate strength.
- Applied about 30 to 45 minutes before your appointment.
- In a thin, even layer on a limited area, not a thick coat over a large zone.
- On intact skin only, never broken, irritated or sunburned skin.
- Removed before treatment, because residue can interfere with the laser.
Never apply it to a large area, never combine multiple numbing products, and do a patch test first if you have sensitive skin, since allergic reactions can happen.
Could it affect the laser?
It can, if misused. Oil-based or heavy products and leftover residue can interfere with how the laser reaches the follicle, which is another reason the cream is applied thinly and wiped off before treatment. Used as directed, it should not reduce the effectiveness of a well-run session.
Do you even need it?
Often not. Modern laser devices include cooling that takes the edge off, and the AAD notes that most people tolerate treatment well. Sensitive areas such as the bikini line or upper lip are where numbing is most often considered. A cooling gel is a gentler alternative if irritation is the concern.
The simple rule
Always ask your clinic before using numbing cream, and follow their instructions on product, amount, area and timing. At CoLaz, comfort is part of the consultation, and we would rather advise you properly than have you apply a strong cream over a large area at home. As the NHS suggests for any cosmetic procedure, a quick conversation with your provider beforehand is always worth it.
