PICO laser is the modern answer to pigmentation and tattoo removal: ultra-short picosecond pulses that shatter pigment without heating the surrounding skin. Fewer sessions, less downtime, and a safer profile on darker skin tones than the older nanosecond lasers it replaces. From £70 per single session, at our Reading clinic.

How PICO laser actually works

PICO laser delivers its energy in picosecond pulses, a thousand times shorter than the nanosecond pulses of older Q-switched lasers. That ultra-short pulse creates a photoacoustic effect rather than a primarily photothermal one: the pigment particles shatter into fragments small enough for the body to clear via the lymphatic system.

Less heat damage to the surrounding skin means a much lower risk of the very thing pigmentation treatments are trying to fix in the first place, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. This is the reason PICO has become the laser of choice for darker Fitzpatrick skin types and for stubborn pigmentation like melasma, where heat can make the condition worse.

The same picosecond effect is what makes PICO so effective for tattoo removal across most ink colours, including the historically difficult blues, greens and yellows that older lasers struggled with.

What a CoLaz session looks like

Your session begins with a free consultation to assess the skin or the tattoo, agree the area, and confirm the course pricing in writing. A patch test is arranged before the first full session where the laser settings require it.

On the day, a topical numbing cream is applied for thirty minutes before pigmentation work, and longer for tattoo removal sessions where the energy is higher. The clinician then delivers the PICO pulses systematically across the target area, with the built-in cooling device making each pass more comfortable.

A pigmentation session takes around thirty minutes; a tattoo session can be shorter or longer depending on the size. The session closes with a soothing barrier cream and SPF 50 applied in clinic, and your aftercare confirmed in writing.

After your PICO laser

The skin is pink and warm for a few hours and may feel like a mild sunburn. Pigmentation patches often look briefly darker before they flake away over the following one to two weeks, which is the visible sign the laser worked. Tattoo sessions can leave the area frosty white for a few minutes, then pink and sometimes lightly scabbed for several days.

SPF 50 every morning for the next four weeks is non-negotiable, the skin is more photosensitive while it clears. Skip retinol, vitamin C and acid-based actives for the first week. Saunas, steam rooms, sunbeds, swimming pools and intense exercise are out for forty-eight hours.

Drink plenty of water in the days after each session, especially after tattoo work, to help the body clear shattered pigment through the lymphatic system. We photograph the area at consultation and at the end of each course so you can see the change honestly.

Common questions

What patients ask first.

What is PICO laser and how is it different from older lasers? +

PICO laser uses picosecond pulses, which are a thousand times shorter than the nanosecond pulses of older Q-switched lasers. That ultra-short pulse shatters pigment particles into smaller fragments through a photoacoustic effect, with less heat damage to the surrounding skin. The result is faster clearance with fewer sessions, less risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation, and a treatment that is safer on darker skin tones where older lasers carry more risk of unwanted side effects.

What does PICO laser treat? +

PICO laser treats sun spots, age spots, freckles, post-inflammatory pigmentation, melasma, tattoo ink in most colours, permanent makeup removal, and general skin rejuvenation for dullness and fine lines. It works on the face, the chest, the back of the hands and most body areas. For tattoo removal, all ink colours can be addressed but stubborn greens, blues and yellows usually need more sessions than black or red.

How many PICO laser sessions will I need? +

Pigmentation usually clears in three to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. Melasma is a more complex condition and often requires a longer maintenance plan combined with topical care, agreed at consultation. Tattoo removal varies hugely by ink type, depth, age of the tattoo and skin type, but a typical protocol is six to ten sessions for a black ink tattoo, spaced six to eight weeks apart. Skin rejuvenation runs as a course of three to six monthly.

Does PICO laser hurt? +

Sensation is similar to a fast rubber-band snap on the skin. We apply a topical numbing cream for thirty minutes before pigmentation sessions, and longer numbing for tattoo removal sessions where the energy is higher. Most patients find tattoo sessions more intense than pigmentation work, but still manageable. The cooling device built into the laser also helps reduce sensation through each pass.

Is there downtime after PICO laser? +

Mild redness and a warm feeling are normal for a few hours. Pigmentation often darkens briefly before it flakes away over the following one to two weeks, which is the visible sign the laser worked. Tattoo sessions can leave the area frosty (white) for a few minutes, then pink and sometimes lightly scabbed for several days. Most patients can return to work the same day with concealer if needed, and full activities the next day.

Who should not have PICO laser? +

We do not treat patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, who have an active skin infection or cold sore in the treatment area, who have a recent strong tan or fake tan on the area, who are on isotretinoin currently or in the last six months, or who have a history of keloid scarring. Patients on photosensitising medications need to discuss this at consultation. Medical history is reviewed at every consultation before treatment is agreed.

How much does PICO laser cost at CoLaz? +

PICO laser is priced by area: bikini line from £70 single, underarms from £90 single, Brazilian or face from £95 single, Hollywood from £110 single. Course of six rates run from £380 (bikini) up to £600 (Hollywood). Add-on neck is £40, chest £60, hands £50. Face pigmentation packages and tattoo removal are quoted at consultation based on size and ink. All prices are confirmed in writing at your free consultation before booking.
