PRP for hair loss is one of the most evidence-based non-surgical options for early to mid-stage pattern thinning, and the only treatment that uses the patient’s own platelets rather than an external drug or device. At CoLaz it is delivered only by qualified clinicians using the Vital Injector or M8 Gun, planned around the stage of hair loss at a free consultation, and priced from £350 per single Stage 1 session across our UK clinics.

How PRP for hair loss actually works

A small blood sample is taken from the arm in the same way as a routine blood test, then spun in a centrifuge for about ten minutes to separate the components. The platelet-rich plasma fraction contains a high concentration of growth factors involved in tissue repair, blood supply and the hair follicle cycle.

The platelet-rich plasma is then drawn into a syringe and injected across the thinning areas of the scalp using a fine needle, delivered through either the Vital Injector or the M8 Gun for a consistent, even distribution. Once placed, the growth factors stimulate dormant or weakened follicles, improve local blood supply and extend the active growth phase of the hair cycle.

Because the plasma comes from your own blood, there is no risk of allergic reaction to the product itself. PRP is not a cure for hair loss caused by a fully scarred follicle, but it is one of the most reliable non-surgical options for early to mid-stage thinning where follicles are still present but weakened.

Staging matters: why we price by stage

Hair loss is staged at consultation to set a realistic plan and an honest expectation. Stage 1 covers very early diffuse thinning across the crown for women, or a slightly receding hairline or early crown thinning for men. Stage 2 is moderate thinning with a clearly thinner crown or more obvious hairline recession. Stage 3 is more advanced thinning with visible scalp through the hair across larger areas. Male Stage 4 is more advanced male pattern baldness where some areas are at the edge of follicle viability.

PRP works best the earlier it is started. Stage 1 and Stage 2 generally respond strongly to the standard three-session course; Stage 3 and Male Stage 4 may benefit from a longer initial course and a more frequent maintenance schedule. Where a follicle is no longer viable, no PRP protocol will regrow hair from it, and a clinician will say so honestly at consultation rather than sell a course that cannot deliver.

The realistic outcome at each stage is confirmed at your free consultation with photographs and a written plan before any treatment is booked.

What to expect during and after the session

Each session takes about an hour, including time for the blood draw, the ten-minute centrifuge spin and the injections themselves. The injections are felt as a quick pinch at each point and most patients describe the sensation as uncomfortable rather than painful. A small amount of topical anaesthetic is available for patients who prefer a more comfortable session.

Immediately after, the scalp may feel tender, warm and look mildly pink for a few hours. There is no functional downtime and most patients return to work or normal life straight away. The aftercare is simple: no shampoo, conditioner or styling product for the first six hours, no saunas, swimming or intense exercise for twenty-four hours, and no hair dye or bleach for one week.

The earliest noticeable change is usually a reduction in daily hair shedding from week four to six. Improved thickness of existing hair follows over weeks eight to twelve, and new baby hairs typically become visible from month three onwards. Photographs taken at the start of the course are reviewed at each session so progress is tracked objectively rather than estimated.

Often considered alongside

Patients booking PRP for hair loss often consider Meso HairMax as a less invasive vitamin-and-amino-acid injectable for hair loss, PRP for the face as a complementary protocol using the same platelet-rich plasma technology, mesotherapy for nutrient-based scalp injections, and microneedling when combining channel creation with growth factor delivery is appropriate.

Common questions

What patients ask first.

What is PRP for hair loss and how does it work? +

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. A small blood sample is taken from your arm in the same way as a routine blood test, then spun in a centrifuge for about ten minutes to separate the components. The platelet-rich plasma fraction, which contains a high concentration of growth factors involved in tissue repair and follicle activity, is then drawn into a syringe and injected across the thinning areas of the scalp using a fine needle. The growth factors stimulate dormant or weakened hair follicles, improve local blood supply and extend the active growth phase of the hair cycle. Because the plasma comes from your own blood, there is no risk of allergic reaction to the product itself.

How is PRP delivered at CoLaz? +

The PRP is injected using one of two devices depending on the clinician. Therapists at CoLaz use the Vital Injector, a hand-held device that delivers a precise dose at a controlled depth across a grid of injection points. Doctors and nurses at CoLaz use the M8 Gun, a slightly different motorised injector with a higher injection rate per minute. Both devices give a consistent, even distribution of the platelet-rich plasma across the treatment area. The choice of device is matched to the practitioner delivering your treatment and the size of the area being treated, and is confirmed at your free consultation.

How many PRP hair loss sessions do I need? +

A typical starting course is three sessions spaced one month apart. Most patients then move to a single maintenance session every four to six months to keep the result steady. The exact protocol is matched to the stage of hair loss at your free consultation: earlier-stage thinning often responds well to the standard three-session course, more advanced thinning may benefit from a longer initial course before the maintenance schedule begins. The full course price is confirmed in writing before the first session is booked.

When will I see results from PRP for hair loss? +

The earliest noticeable change is usually a reduction in daily hair shedding, often visible from week four to six. Improved thickness and density of existing hair follows over weeks eight to twelve as the new growth cycle takes hold. New baby hairs in previously thinning areas typically become visible from month three onwards. Photographs taken at the start of the course are reviewed at each session so progress is tracked objectively, and the maintenance schedule is agreed once the initial course is complete. PRP works best when started early, before follicles have been dormant for a long time.

Does PRP for hair loss hurt and is there downtime? +

The scalp is a sensitive area and the injections are felt as a quick pinch at each point. Most patients describe the sensation as uncomfortable rather than painful, and we use a small amount of topical anaesthetic for patients who prefer a more comfortable session. Immediately after, the scalp may feel tender, warm and look mildly pink for a few hours. There is no functional downtime and most patients return to work or normal life straight away. The only restrictions are practical: no shampoo, hair dye or pool swimming for the times stated in the aftercare.

Who should not have PRP for hair loss? +

We do not treat patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, who have an active scalp infection, eczema flare or psoriasis flare in the treatment area, who have a bleeding or platelet disorder, who are on certain blood-thinning medications, who have a history of significant immune-related conditions, or who have certain cancers (current or recent). PRP is not a cure for hair loss caused by a fully scarred follicle or by genetic late-stage baldness; it works best on early to mid-stage thinning where follicles are still present but weakened. Suitability and realistic outcome are always confirmed at a detailed free consultation before any treatment is booked.

How much does PRP for hair loss cost at CoLaz? +

Pricing is matched to the stage of hair loss. Women Stage 1 or Male Stage 1 is £350 per single session, with a course of three at £840. Stage 2 is £450 per single session, with a course of three at £1,080. Stage 3 is £550 per single session, with a course of three at £1,320. Male Stage 4 is £650 per single session, with a course of three at £1,500. The consultation fee is £50 with a therapist or £100 with a doctor or nurse, redeemable in full against any treatment you book. The full course price is confirmed in writing before the first session, with no upsells in the chair and no hidden charges.
