IV vitamin C drip: what it actually does and what it doesn't

Vitamin C is the most requested single ingredient in our IV room, and it is also the one patients arrive with the most inflated expectations about. The honest answer is that an IV vitamin C drip does something real to your blood chemistry and something much smaller to how you feel. This guide separates the two, using regulator guidance and peer-reviewed evidence rather than marketing copy.

What is an IV vitamin C drip?

An IV vitamin C drip is an infusion of ascorbic acid, diluted in sterile fluid and delivered into a vein through a small cannula over roughly 30 to 60 minutes. It is given either on its own or as one ingredient inside a wider blend of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Doses vary enormously depending on the setting. A wellness-clinic blend might contain a few grams of vitamin C alongside B vitamins and minerals. In the research literature, high-dose usually means 10 g or more per infusion, with oncology studies running 50 g to 100 g two or three times a week under close medical supervision.

Those are different treatments with different risk profiles, even though both get called a vitamin C drip. Knowing which one you are being offered is the first question worth asking.

Why does an IV drip reach higher blood levels than tablets?

Because the gut puts a ceiling on how much vitamin C you can absorb, and an intravenous line goes around it. Absorption from the digestive tract depends on transporters that saturate, so oral dosing plateaus no matter how many tablets you swallow.

The numbers are stark. In a formal pharmacokinetic study, baseline plasma vitamin C sat at around 2 mg/dL, while a 10 g infusion produced a peak of 42 mg/dL and a 25 g infusion reached 103 mg/dL. The same study found that even a 100 g dose was fully cleared by the kidneys within 24 hours.

That last detail is the part clinics rarely mention. The high level is real, and it is also temporary. Your body treats surplus vitamin C as something to excrete, not something to store.

What does the evidence actually say about high-dose vitamin C?

It says the effects are modest, inconsistent, and mostly measured in people who are ill rather than people who feel a bit flat. That is a very different picture from the one presented on most drip menus.

For the common cold, the Cochrane review of more than 9,000 episodes found that regular vitamin C supplementation shortened colds by about 8 per cent in adults, and that high doses started after symptoms appear showed no consistent effect. Eight per cent of a seven-day cold is roughly half a day.

In critical illness the results have contradicted each other. The 2026 systematic review in the Journal of Medicine and Life notes that the large LOVIT trial of 872 patients found higher risk in the vitamin C arm with no benefit, and concludes that current evidence does not support routine use in sepsis.

The UK regulator has reached a similar view of wellness marketing. The ASA states plainly that it has yet to see convincing evidence supporting the claimed benefits of specific intravenous nutritional therapies, and in December 2023 it upheld a complaint against a UK drip provider advertising immunity, energy, slimming and anti-ageing drips to healthy adults. Evidence drawn from oral supplement studies, the ASA ruled, does not transfer to an IV bag.

We would rather tell you that up front than sell you a bag on a promise the regulator has already rejected.

Can an IV vitamin C drip improve your skin?

Vitamin C is genuinely essential for skin, but an IV vitamin C drip is an inefficient way to act on that if your diet is already adequate. The biology is not in dispute: skin fibroblasts have an absolute dependence on vitamin C to synthesise collagen and to regulate the collagen and elastin balance in the dermis.

The catch is saturation. That same review concludes that supplementation is only expected to raise skin vitamin C in people whose plasma levels were below saturation to begin with. If you eat fruit and vegetables most days, you are probably already there.

Adults aged 19 to 64 need 40 mg a day according to the NHS, and true deficiency is rare in the UK. One orange, one kiwi or a handful of peppers covers it. That is the uncomfortable arithmetic behind most vitamin C skin marketing.

If your goal is skin quality rather than blood chemistry, we will usually recommend treatments that act on the skin directly. A course of microneedling, a peel or a skin booster does more for texture and tone than any infusion, and we will say so at the consultation.

What an IV vitamin C drip will not do

Four claims come up in almost every IV consultation, so here they are with the honest answer attached.

  • It will not treat cancer. High-dose vitamin C injections are not routinely available to cancer patients in the UK, the research is at an early stage, and some supplements can interfere with how cancer drugs work. Anyone in active treatment should speak to their oncology team before any infusion.
  • It will not fix ongoing fatigue. Persistent tiredness needs investigation, not an infusion. Thyroid function, ferritin, B12, sleep and mental health are the first places to look, and that is a GP conversation.
  • It will not replace a diagnosis. If you suspect a deficiency, ask your GP for a blood test. Treating a number you have never measured is guesswork.
  • It will not deliver a lasting result from one session. Your kidneys clear the surplus within a day.

Is an IV vitamin C drip safe?

For most healthy adults a moderate-dose infusion given by a trained clinician is well tolerated, but high-dose vitamin C carries specific risks that make screening non-negotiable. This is not a treatment where the bag matters more than the person placing the line.

The first risk is haemolysis in people with G6PD deficiency, an inherited enzyme condition that is more common in people of African, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and South Asian heritage. A review of published cases found red cell breakdown after vitamin C doses ranging from 1 g to 200 g a day, most of them intravenous. The practical advice in the literature is to establish G6PD status by screening before any high dose is given, particularly in higher-prevalence groups.

The second is the kidneys. Oxalate is a metabolite of vitamin C, and repeated or excessive infusions have produced biopsy-proven oxalate nephropathy, in some reported cases severe enough to require dialysis. Existing kidney impairment, dehydration and a very high oxalate diet all raise that risk.

Then there are the ordinary infusion risks: bruising or irritation at the cannula site, a cool sensation or brief metallic taste as the fluid runs, and, rarely, infection or an allergic reaction. High-dose vitamin C can also produce falsely high readings on some point-of-care glucose meters, which matters if you are diabetic.

Who should not have an IV vitamin drip

We do not treat everyone who asks, and this is the list that decides it.

  • Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Anyone with significant kidney or heart disease, or a history of kidney stones.
  • Anyone with known or suspected G6PD deficiency who has not been screened.
  • Anyone taking blood-thinning medication, chemotherapy, or medication that interacts with high-dose vitamins.
  • Anyone with a known allergy to a component of the blend.
  • Anyone whose real problem is an undiagnosed symptom. That belongs with a GP first.

If any of these apply, the answer at every CoLaz clinic is a conversation, not a cannula.

During the consultation she mentioned she was taking a blood-thinning medication, which is one of several situations where IV vitamin therapy is not appropriate, and we declined to treat her. Is an IV vitamin C drip worth the money?

For a well-nourished adult with no diagnosed deficiency, an IV vitamin C drip buys a comfortable hour and a short-lived change in blood chemistry, and the published evidence does not support paying for it as a health intervention. That is the honest answer, and it is the same one we give across the desk.

There are narrower situations where an infusion or an injection makes more sense: a proven deficiency, a malabsorption condition, rehydration after illness, or a documented low B12. In those cases the target is specific and measurable.
