Beta hydroxy acids, also known as BHA, are organic acids that ‘unglue’ dead skin cells and have anti-inflammatory properties. They can also dissolve fat (oil). Salicylic is the most common BHA; it has a strong ability to penetrate pores and clean them out. It was originally derived from willow bark, like aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid).
